Long before I ever thought about self-care or wellbeing in any intentional way, scent and aromatherapy was already part of my world.

Some of my earliest memories of aromatherapy come from watching my mum choose samples for her florist shop. I remember standing nearby as she lifted tiny bottles, carefully smelling, comparing, and deciding which ones felt right. At the time, I did not have the language for it. I just knew I was fascinated. The way a scent could stop her mid-thought. The way certain aromas felt comforting, while others felt fresh and energising.

Looking back, that quiet curiosity was the beginning of my aromatherapy journey.

A curiosity that grew with me

As the years passed, that early fascination never really went away. If anything, it deepened. I found myself wanting to learn more, reading articles, dipping into mini guides, and taking short courses in aromatherapy whenever I could. Not because I had a grand plan to become an expert, but because I genuinely loved understanding why certain scents made me feel the way they did.

I have spent years happily experimenting with different oils, blends, and brands. Some have become firm favourites, others less so. That process of discovery, of smelling, noticing, and learning, is something I still enjoy just as much now.

One of the things I love most about aromatherapy and beneficial oils is that it never feels finished. There is always a new combination to explore, a new benefit to learn about, and another layer of understanding to uncover. At the moment I am experimenting with a black seed blending oil combined with Rosemary essential oil. I heard Rosemary oil is great for circulation and black seed oil delivers antioxidants, fatty acids and is nutrients rich.

Aromatherapy as a way back to myself

These days, aromatherapy is woven into my life in a much quieter, more intentional way. It is no longer about curiosity alone. It is about how scent supports my wellbeing and my need for stillness.

I mostly use essential oils in a diffuser, often during the most ordinary parts of the day. Early mornings when the house is still half-asleep. Mid-afternoons when my energy dips. Evenings when I want to soften the edges of the day and gently signal that it is time to slow down.

I tend to reach for ready-made diffuser blends during these moments, as they feel thoughtfully balanced and easy to use. But I just as much love a good old roller ball version for when I am on the go. Having blends created specifically for wellbeing takes the pressure off and allows me to simply enjoy the experience. I have recently been enjoying exploring pulse point roller ball oil blends like those found in the Tisserand essential oil collection, particularly when I want something supportive without having to overthink combinations.

These moments are not dramatic or perfectly curated. They are small, lived-in rituals, and that is exactly why they work.

Self-care without pressure

For a long time, I struggled with the idea of self-care. It often felt like something else I was failing at, another thing I should be doing better.

Aromatherapy changed that for me.

It does not demand anything. I do not need to carve out hours or follow strict routines. I simply choose a scent that feels right and let it quietly support me in the background while I get on with my day.

Sometimes that looks like pairing a calming oil blend with journalling or stretching. Other times it is simply there while I cook dinner or sit with a cup of tea (herbal of course). A familiar aroma surrounding me like a comforting aura can gently shift the atmosphere of a room and my mind, making it feel more nurturing and calm. This is something I especially appreciate when using well-crafted oil blend such as those from Tisserand’s aromatherapy blends

Learning, blending, and listening

Despite years of reading and studying, I still find myself learning something new about aromatherapy all the time. Different oils support different moods. Certain combinations can feel grounding one day and uplifting the next. Our bodies and minds change, and what we need changes with them.

That ongoing relationship with learning is something I treasure. Aromatherapy invites curiosity rather than perfection. It encourages listening, to your body, your emotions, and your energy levels, and responding with kindness.

I have come to appreciate thoughtfully blended oils in particular, especially when life feels full. Knowing that a blend has been carefully created by experienced aromatherapists allows me to simply enjoy the scent and how it makes me feel, without analysing every drop.

A gentle companion on my wellbeing journey

I do not see aromatherapy as a solution or a shortcut. For me, it is a companion, something that walks alongside my wellbeing journey rather than trying to lead it.

Scent has a way of anchoring me in the present moment. It reminds me to breathe and helps my body and home feel calmer, warmer, and more familiar. It connects me back to those early memories of standing beside my mum, quietly absorbing the magic of scent, without realising how much it would stay with me.

If there is one thing aromatherapy has taught me, it is that self-care does not need to be loud or complicated to be meaningful. Sometimes it is as simple as breathing in a scent that feels like home and allowing yourself to pause, just for a moment.

A closing note on aromatherapy and wellbeing

Aromatherapy has become an important part of my self-care routine, supporting my emotional wellbeing through simple daily rituals. Whether you are new to essential oils or have your own long-standing relationship with scent, creating small moments of calm at home or even on even go can be a powerful way to support balance, relaxation, and mindfulness. For me, aromatherapy is not about perfection, but about presence, curiosity, and kindness towards myself.
